Biomedical Image Based Models for University

In this short project, we wanted to show the powerful capability of COMSOL Multiphysics - the ability to import, repair, and work with segmented biomedical scans of real tissues.

Although most of our simulations on demand are done for companies, universities sometimes also reach out to us. Ordering the preparation of educational models for biomedical engineers? Why not! There are many biomedical models available in the COMSOL Multiphysics Application Library. These models are segmented data obtained from CT or MRI scans. However, such meshes are often unsuitable for FEM analysis — they may contain holes, extreme aspect ratio elements, overlaps, heavily distorted elements, or poor-quality FEM structures. The simulation engineer's work begins. Thanks to COMSOL Multiphysics, biomedical scans can be imported, repaired with handling every element, and re-meshed into a high-quality FEM-ready geometry. In many cases, additional geometry is needed for further modeling. We can, for example, add the geometry of a biomedical tool.

We were asked to prepare engaging computational models for FEM Biomedical analysis. So, we modified some of the COMSOL Multiphysics Application Library models. This project was completely free of charge as a proof-of-concept.
